1916 "Watch your Vote" Bottle |
This is an crown-top machine-made bottle with the Goebel Shield embossed
on the shoulder. It has the die-cut "Pure Food" shield for the
main label. The neck label is not completely intact, but what I can read
is:
"... prohibition...November 7th....cannot
make or sell this
splendid beverage in Michigan.
WATCH YOUR VOTE
Vote NO on prohibition Vote YES on Home Rule"
|
The bottle is most likely from the fall of 1916 right before Michigan
voted for State-wide prohibition. The Home Rule that is referred to
was a separate Home Rule Amendment which would give incorporated villages
and cities the right to decide by home rule whether liquors shall be sold
within their boundaries. This amendment was defeated in the election
and Michigan was put under state-wide prohibition on May 1, 1917, almost 3
years before national prohibition took effect. |
