U-Permit Numbers Index |
|
|
U-permit
numbers were issued to brewers by the U.S. Government following prohibition as a method of
licensing. The permit #'s were required to be on all product labeling from 1933
until September of 1935, but the usage extended into at least 1936. The mostly
appear on bottle & keg labels, but they also do appear on some early cans. They
are a quite reliable way (along with other indicators) to reliably date early
post-prohibition labels. For more information on dating of labels (and other good
label info) you should visit the Beer Label
Corner (by Bob Kay) on the ABA Web Site. I'm trying to build the most comprehensive index of U-Permit numbers on-line. My job was made considerably easier thanks to Jody Farra. He graciously agreed to let me use the list that he had worked so hard to compile several years ago. We all owe him a lot of thanks for his work! I have added several that I have found that they did not have on the list. These are marked in red. If you have any additional U-Permit (or L-Permit) numbers that I don't have listed here, please e-mail me with the info so that I can update this list. I have categorized them in two different ways: by District/Permit Number (below) and by State. |
