Prohibition in Michigan | |
|
|||||||||||||
Michigan and the Great Lakes played a very integral part in the history of
National Prohibition.
From the "importation" of Canadian beer & liquor to the
adventures of the Purple Gang, it was a colorful time. I will be adding items & information to this page from the era of the "Great Experiment." including information on the prohibition movement's influence on Michigan during the years leading up to National Prohibition. I will also be adding information about the taxation/liquor laws of Michigan's past. |

Eberle Brewing Co. vs. Local Option In 1914, Eberle Brewing Co. of Jackson ran afoul of the "Local Option" that had been enacted in Jackson County at the time. The "Local Option" allowed individual counties to vote themselves dry. This often resulted in breweries finding themselves suddenly operating in a dry county (Ionia Brewing Co. ran into a similar situation). Eberle's case actually made it all of the way to the U.S. Supreme court! More information on this case.... |
